The Pastel Journal published results of its Top 100 competition recently. Looking at the images you either think they are all stunning or "why can't I get in." PJ included A Word of Advice, excellent comments from the jurors.
Those comments alone are worth the cost of the magazine. Doug Dawson explains that a juror may see an image for only 10 seconds and suggests scanning your own images at that fast pace to decide which ones to submit to a competition. The hardest advice to assimilate may be Stephanie Birdsall's: "Paint the essence of a subject. Paint the idea - and not just what you see."
Incidentally, subscribing to Pastel Journal through Amazon gets you not only the print editions but free instant access on a Kindle.
