Interview Yourself

How would you respond to interview questions?
This is the 4th year that PSST has featured an artist of of the month with an interview. Some months the questions are specific to the artist, but in general the questions are standard. They ask about technique, marketing and studio set-up.

I recently submitted a press release to my local community magazine, Pecan Grove Monthly, including information about pastel and PSST. Typical 5W's.

The editor decided to run it as a feature, but wanted to add more depth. As I read her questions, I realized how very difficult interview questions can be. She asked:

• What about pastel painting does it for you? Or in other words, why do you only paint pastel works?
• How do you get in the zone to paint?
• If a picture is worth 1,000 words, what's a painting worth?
• Why do you think arts, specifically paintings, are important to our society?
• Typically how long does it take to complete a piece of work.
  

No flip, off-the-shelf answers for these ... they required really thinking, digging in. Even the last question required something other than "a lifetime."
