1. The Surface
• Main Paper: Pastelmat, Canson Touch, or Canson Velvet (grey colors)
• Practice Paper: Canson Mi‑Teintes (grey or neutral), 9×12 inches
2. Soft Pastels
• Bring whatever pastels you already own
• Recommended sets:
– Unison Color 63 or 120 Half Stick Set
– Sennelier “Paris Collection”
• Specific recommendation: Rembrandt Bluish Green #640.2
• Pastel pencils: optional
3. PanPastels
• Yellows, oranges, and reds
• Suggested: Hansa Yellow, Orange, Permanent Red
4. Tools & Sponges
• Makeup sponges (wedge or oval, cut in half)
• PanPastel Sofft Tools (optional)
• Baby wipes
5. Sketching & Miscellaneous
• Willow charcoal and charcoal pencil
• Backing board and artist tape

Paper
Bring a range of values, temperatures, and chroma.
Recommended brands:
Paper
- UArt, LuxArchival, Sennelier La Carte, Pastelmat, or similar sanded paper
- Recommended: UArt 400 (mounted preferred)
- Note: Liquid underpainting may be used; La Carte does not accept liquid

- Blue Earth (Nomad set of 56)
- Sennelier (80 Half Plein Air or 120 Half Paris set)

- 8×10, 9×12, or 11×14
- Kim will likely work on 9×12
- Easel and board (masonite, foamcore, or gatorboard)
- Artist tape or masking tape
- Wet wipes and paper towels
- Brushes: Bamboo watercolor round (Connoisseur brand) and/or flat bristle brush (size 8–12)
- Rubbing alcohol
- Mechanical pencil or pastel pencil
- Optional: Gloves in a Bottle, razor blade, small round bristle brush, chamois cloth

Most supplies can be purchased on line for reasonable prices. The larger sheets of paper can be cut into smaller sizes and I suggest working small at least in the beginning. Suggested sites: Art Supply Warehouse, Jerry’s Artarama, Cheap Joe’s, Dick Blick and Dakota Pastels

PASTEL PAPER CHOICES:
The best papers are the sanded ones. Sennelier has a nice smooth tooth but if any water gets on it it acts like acid; Colorfix Art Spectrum is rougher but I love it. UArt is very popular though I don’t tend to use it and it may need a tone put on, Pastel Premier , Luxe Archival is nice but you may want to tone it with pastel and alcohol or watercolor. Pastel Mat is great.. has a nice finish as well. The canson paper is not great especially for building color but it is less expensive.
Art Spectrum Colorfix Paper any colors but white or very light I prefer Terra Cotta, Raw Sienna, Aubergine, and other darks…you can get sample packs
Pastel Mat…the wine color is great
U Art…I’d get a pretty fine tooth. There are different grades of tooth…I don’t use it but it’s quite popular. I like to have a tone to work from
Sennelier La Carte Sanded Pastel Card (keep in mind it cannot accept any moisture) suggested colors: blue/gray, sienna, no white or pink
PASTELS:
Pastels vary a lot in softness and expense. If you are just starting out, then there are half stick sets available and a good way to get more colors for less money. The best ones are by Unison, and are available at Dakota Pastels (google it) but if you want to get full sets, you may find the other sources cheaper.
A selection of some hard and soft is best. For hard and cheap pastels, Nu Pastels are good. A large set isn’t too expensive and a good addition to any sets.
Terry Ludwig soft and rectangular…a favorite of mine
Great American also soft and rectangular and a favorite
Blue Earth also soft and rectangular…wonderful pastels
Unison...a great solution especially if you only get one kind.
Schminke creamy but am preferring the Terry Ludwigs
Girault
Ones I would avoid are Rembrandt and Windsor Newton.
There are many others, but these are the best for me.
