MARCH 9, 2024 ZOOM MEETING
10:30 Business Meeting
11:00 Artist Demonstration, Denice Peters, Iowa
Denice will demonstrate a still life with a focus on light

Denice Peters.
My goal is to create realistic pastel paintings using strong light and shadow with a bit of nostalgia and a sense of peace. I’m attracted by the effect that light has on nature and everyday objects. This spark of brightness shining against the darkness is what inspires my work.

Regardless of subject, each painting is about this dramatic glow evoking an emotional response using my self honed style I call ‘Blended Reality’. The elements of light, detail and feeling all come together in a realistic way to create serenity, appeal and sentimentality, through everyday items and antiques, or landscapes that I visit. This is done without any tools other than fingers and pastel sticks. Starting with a quick hand drawn sketch of just the shapes, I then add the color and details as I paint.

I want to help others see the beauty and peace that is all around us. Life is too short to do otherwise.

Bio: Denice is an Iowa native and a self taught artist. She Became full time in 2010 but has been painting with pastels for over 30 years. She exhibits nationally and has won many awards. Denice recently had a full page article about her in the American Art Collector Magazine. She was juried in as a member in the International Guild of Realism, she achieved Signature Status in MidAmerica Pastel Society, and the Iowa Pastel Society of which she is the President. She is also a member of Pastel Society of America and Pastel Society of the West Coast. Her work is in collections across the US with some in Mexico and England.

APRIL 6, 2024 ZOOM MEETING
10:30 Business Meeting
11:00 Artist Demonstration, Lea Chang (Yuli Chang), Taiwan
Lea will demonstrate the painting of an animal

Lea Chang (Yuli Chang) Yuli was born in Taiwan and graduated from a well known Art School in Taipei.  She loved painting when she was a child, has always felt that painting is a real action to achieve imaginary beauty.  She chose pastel media to create, because she feels that as long as she uses "finger", she can freely use her imagination and creativity, which is a great thing! She likes to depict the beauty of the world around her through pastels, and uses magic at her fingertips.  She enjoys painting girl's soft hair, delicate face, and pet's loving eyes. Sometimes the painting is gentle and delicate, and sometimes it is thick and strong, all of which are Yuli's interpretation of the image of beauty.

Yuli is a Signature member of the Pastel Society of America  and has won many awards from international competitions.

11:00 Artist Demonstration, Diane Brahm, followed by mini-workshop
Diane will demonstrate Birds of a Feather

Diane Brahm.
As a professional artist, I work with pastels, oils, and pencil/charcoal drawing…but I am always open to trying new mediums and concepts! I enjoy teaching, and judging and jurying art shows in and around Texas. I am currently teaching painting and drawing in west Houston. Many years ago, I earned a BFA in drawing and painting from the University of Texas at Austin, and that got me started in my artistic career. It has been a great journey honing and broadening my creative skills, and the results have been rewarding.  I have been taught and tutored by some of the best, received many honors and awards,  and been able to share that knowledge gained with others.

SEPTEMBER 14, 2024 IN-PERSON MEETING
10:30 Business Meeting
11:00 Artist Demonstration, Carolyn Hancock

Carolyn Hancock.
Framing -- love it or hate it, your framing package is critical to the artwork you've spent so many hours on. The demo will cover many framing choices and how-to's. Examples of different frames. Trending frame colors. Tips on glass, backing and assembly. Frame-Tex Econospace, Wall Buddy picture hangers. Security hangers.

Carolyn is a portrait, figurative and seascape art. "The face and the ocean: they are so alike. They constantly move and glow, change personality, and make you long for something more. At any moment, they evoke distinct characteristics -- joyous, mysterious, volatile, beautiful. They have a stopping moment, a moment that captures the light, emotion and movement at just the right time that says, "This is me." That's why I love painting both and easily switch between portraits and seascapes. They are my happy time."

You will find the luminous beauty and color of the pastel medium in all of her paintings: energetic strokes, visible texture, smoothness, transparency, all balanced with rich colors and soft neutrals. Beautiful faces and believable waves.

OCTOBER 5, 2024 ZOOM MEETING
10:30 Business Meeting
11:00 Artist Demonstration, Robert Dutton, England.

Autumn Landscape. Explore the transitional colours of the change of season with field patterns and woodlands through a landscape with depth

Robert Dutton. Robert is a professional artist and lives in Nunnington, Ryedale, North Yorkshire, with his inspirational painting and expressive drawing subject matter of the North York Moors, Yorkshire Dales, and the East Yorkshire Coast within easy reach. Following successive shows in London with his work and sell out shows in the North of England, in 2013 Robert took the decision to become a full time artist when his paintings became popular and in much more demand. ‘Something had to give and it certainly wasn’t going to be my art!’ A statement made by Robert with confidence and has proved the decision to be the correct one with numerous fine art awards in both leading UK galleries and open art competitions nationally and internationally.

Robert exhibits his unique style of painting at The Mall Galleries in London with the prestigious Pastel Society and the Society of Graphic Fine Art, with whom he is now elected with full membership. He also teaches popular and regular sell out residential art holidays in The Lake District. He is a regular demonstrator nationally for art groups and is a popular online art tutor with ‘Paintersonline’ and is a regular contributor to ‘The Artist’ magazine and the Unison Colour Pastel Academy. In March 2021  Robert published his book Drawing Dramatic Landscapes, which highlights his expressive style, with insights to his painting approach and step by step guides in creating his dramatic landscape subjects.

NOVEMBER 2, 2024 IN-PERSON MEETING
10:30 Business Meeting
11:00 Artist Demonstration, Carolina Dalmas:
"Alla Prima" Still Life. Made Simple.

CAROLINA DALMAS.
Argentinian artist Carolina Dalmas founder of “Artistically Painted and Designed” creates art with a deep connection to nature through botanical and floral themes.
Her Contemporary Realism style portrays the texture and color of a vibrant world around us, bringing pure joy to her international art collectors.
Her art classes are based on observation, encouraging her students to learn to see first; she believes this journey of discovery helps her students see the world as if they are seeing it for the first time, which not only helps them artistically but also their everyday lives through creative problem-solving.
Acrylic and pastels are her favorite mediums. She likes the freshness of pastels because it helps to keep her work light and simple. One of Carolina's pastel works was recently awarded first place for the Still Life category on the 24th edition of the" Pastel 100 Competition" hosted by the magazine Pastel Journal.

NOVEMBER 2, 2024 CAROLINA DALMAS MINI-WORKSHOP
12:30 - 3:30 following meeting at Trini-Mendenhall Community Center
Workshop Fee: $50

"Alla Prima" Still Life - Focusing on Intention

Direct painting or “Alla Prima” implies executing a painting from start-to-finish in one session.  During this workshop, we’ll paint a still life, grasping the freshness and mood of the setting in one sitting.
Restricting the time used to complete an artwork will result in a spontaneous and free-flowing painting. Focusing on our intention throughout the process will help us make that happen.
The mini-workshop starts with a brief explanation about how to set up a still life, considering how to arrange the elements to create a good composition and positioning of light to clearly create the areas of light and shadows essential to create the illusion of form in our paper.  I’ll give a brief lecture covering shapes, value, edges, color harmony, and movement as we move along.
