There may be a hundred different ways of taping or clipping paper to a support backer, and you've probably tried them all. You tape all around the edge, trying to keep it no more than 1/4 inch in; take the tape off and the unpainted edge shows past the frame rabbet Or you neatly tape all around the edge, but before you can finish the painting, the tape loosens from the sanded paper Or you use clips and have to move them around to paint all the way to the edge Or you want to use clips but the clip won't reach the paper Or you have it neatly taped underneath the paper but there's a poufy spot in the middle right where you need to paint a tiny highlight in an eye Try a magnetic dry erase board. Simply hold paper against the board and place magnets wherever you need them, the edges or the middle. Move them as you paint corners and edges. Use one to hold the center tight. The magnets will hold different thicknesses, i.e., foam core or extra sheets to provide padding. As a precaution, a couple of magnets can be stacked at the bottom edge of the painting to prevent slide. The board is available at most office supply stores, in different sizes. If you need to buy extra magnets, the round ones the size of a nickel work well. You can also remove the frame from the board if it is in the way on the easel. The photo shows the white edge left from removing tape. With the magnets it is easy to hold the painting in place and paint those uneven edges away.
